Abstract: The volume presents the Proceedings of the National Conference of SID – the Italian Society of Design, held in Naples on 26–27 June 2025, on the topic of Plural Design. Alternative Cases and Models for Innovation, organized by DiARC – the Department of Architecture at the University of Naples Federico II.

The Conference explored Plural Design as a strategic paradigm for alternative and discontinuous forms of innovation, grounded in multiplicity, collaboration, and inclusivity. Through research case studies and design experimentations, it examined the role of design within multicultural contexts, redefining the notion of “context” as a dynamic space of relationships, interaction, and transformation, also in typically marginalized areas.

The volume opens with an introduction that includes presentations by SID President Lorenzo Imbesi and Chairman Alfonso Morone, as well as contributions from four international keynote speakers: Blanca Callén Moreu (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona), Curro Claret (Elisava, Facultad de Diseño e Ingeniería de Barcelona), Ernesto Oroza (École supérieure d'art et design de Saint-Étienne), and Alfredo Gutiérrez Borrero (Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogotá), preceded by an introductory text by Ramon Rispoli. In the same section, Carla Langella presents a contribution by Enza Migliore on the international perspectives of Italian researchers. The section also includes a contribution by Eleonora Lupo, SID Vice President, dedicated to the biographies and motivations underlying the appointment of Paola Antonelli, Ermanno Guida, Patrizia Ranzo, and Ramonda Riccini as Honorary Members. A second section documents the exhibition on “Design a Napoli” (1950–2000), hosted at Palazzo Gravina in conjunction with the Conference, introduced by curator Pietro Nunziante.

The main part of the volume contains 140 thematic contributions by 352 authors: 92 relating to research projects, divided into three areas—Plural Cultures, Plural Practices, and Plural Communities—and 48 papers dedicated to research ideas presented by researchers under 35.

The concluding section presents infographics, maps, and quantitative data offering a visual and analytical reading of the themes addressed, along with a photographic narrative of the Conference days. The Proceedings, consisting of a total of 1,815 pages, are published in two languages, the authors' original language and English.
