Abstract: This volume contains an in-depth survey carried out among the members of the Italian Society of Road Infrastructures (S.I.I.V.), regarding the state of teaching and research on airport infrastructure. S.I.I.V. brings together university professors and researchers of the Scientific Disciplinary Sector 08/CEAR-03/A (formerly ICAR/04), whose competences, according to the declaration of Ministerial Decree 2/05/2024 no. 639, concern the theories, models, techniques, and processes for the conception, design, construction, adaptation, maintenance, and management of airport assets, with regard to functionality, performance, safety, sustainability, risk, resilience, environmental and territorial impact, social and economic effectiveness of investments over the life cycle, digitalization, and new technologies. Since its foundation—and even earlier through the work of individual academics—S.I.I.V. has been dedicated to the study of the airport system, analyzed in its various aspects, with the aim of contributing to the knowledge and development of a sector that is strategic for the national economy. With this volume, S.I.I.V. intends to disseminate, in a concise yet comprehensive manner, the contents of the teaching and research activities that it has institutionally carried out and continues to promote in this fundamental field. Within S.I.I.V., a Working Group has been established, specifically dedicated to mobility and airport infrastructure. This volume represents the outcome of a preliminary in-depth study on the subject.

His scientific activity focuses on the use of ground-based non-destructive methods and Earth Observation techniques to improve infrastructure resilience and promote preventive archaeology.

Tiziana Campisi, University of Enna Kore

Associate Professor of Transport at the Department of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Enna Kore. She obtained her PhD in “Architecture of Mobility Systems” in 2014 with top marks, focusing on issues related to road safety in roundabouts. Her research activity focuses on sustainable mobility, with particular reference to road, air, and water transport. She is the author of over 200 articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings

Vittorio de Riso di Carpinone, University of Sannio

Born in 1968, he graduated in 1994 and earned his PhD in 2001 with a thesis on airport capacity. Since 2010, he has been teaching Fondamenti di Infrastrutture Viarie at the University of Sannio. His research activity focused on airport capacity until 2013, after which he continued working as a freelance engineer

Paola Di Mascio, University of Rome La Sapienza

Associate Professor of Road, Railway, and Airport Construction at Sapienza University of Rome. She teaches the Airport Infrastructure course. Since 2015, she has been Director of the 2nd-level Master’s program “Construction and Management of Airport Structures.” From 2015 to 2021, she coordinated the PhD program in “Infrastructure and Transport.” Her research activities focus on airport and road safety. She is the author of more than 80 international scientific publications.

Gilda Ferrotti, Marche Polytechnic University

PhD in Structures and Infrastructure and, since 2021, Associate Professor of Roads, Railways, and Airports at Marche Polytechnic University. She teaches the courses Road Design and Impact and Safety of Transportation Systems. Her research activities focus on binders and bituminous mixtures, interlayers in flexible pavements, and eco-friendly materials. In 2023, she won PRIN funding as Principal Investigator for the project “Waterproofing Innovations for Concrete Decks.”

Cristina Oreto, University of Naples Federico II

Researcher at the Department of Civil, Building, and Environmental Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II. Awarded the title of Doctor Europaeus with honors in 2023, her research focuses on life cycle assessment of innovative and low-carbon technologies for road pavements. To date, she is the author of more than 40 articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings.

Marco Pasetto, University of Padua

Full Professor of Roads, Railways, and Airports at the University of Padua. Director of the 2nd-level Master’s programs in “Planning, Design, Construction, Management and Maintenance of Airport Infrastructure” and “Logistics for Safety and Emergency” at the same university, which he also represents since 2022 in the European network ACARE – Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe. President of SIIV (Italian Road Infrastructures Society) in 2013–2014. Author or co-author of about 340 publications

Alberto Portera, Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC)

He obtained his PhD in 2024 at Politecnico di Torino.
