Abstract: The volume contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of multi- and plurilingualism in international scientific communication and seeks to contribute to its possible and necessary conceptualisation in contemporary scientific contexts. The emphasis is placed on the interplay between the acquisition of knowledge and the collective and public dimensions of science. This relationship needs to be analysed as a genuine linguistic challenge, since it implies first and foremost an obligation of the language itself rather than of its speakers.  From a linguistic perspective, this is exemplified by the processes of translocating scientific knowledge into different languages, contexts and institutions (mainly through the language of academic teaching); the development of specific technical and scientific domains (such as Medicine); the shaping of (multi- and plurilingual) competence in controversies and explanatory processes in teaching contexts; and (also from the perspective of a Philosophy of Knowledge) the interconnection of epistemic constraints and social strategies in the sciences.

Giancarmine Bongo, University of Naples Federico II

Giancarmine Bongo teaches German Language and Linguistics at the University of Naples Federico II. His main research interests include German as a scientific language and as a Kultursprache; German as a foreign language (DaF), as a second language (DaZ) in the context of migration and as a third language (L3); plurilingualism; the linguistics of knowledge. Among his publications: Der theoretische Raum der Wissenschaftssprache. Untersuchungen über die funktionale Konstitution einer Wissenschaftssprachtheorie und deren Anwendung in der Praxis (2010), (with Giuditta Caliendo) The Language of Popularization: Theoretical and Descriptive Models / Die Sprache der Popularisierung: theoretische und deskriptive Modelle (2014), Kultursprache. Alessandra Zurolo, University of Naples Federico II

Alessandra Zurolo is researcher in German linguistics at the University of Naples “Federico II”, where she also obtained her PhD in Mind, Gender and Language with a dissertation on a diachronic analysis of the German medical textbook. Her publications and interests focus on text- and discourse linguistics, the diachronic development and synchronic analysis of the German language in (medical) scientific communication and in other variational domains (e.g. diatopic), the formal and functional analysis of conceptual metaphors.
