Abstract: The Fourth Report on “Crime and Security in Naples”, following the previous three editions, proposes in the first section an analysis of the dynamics of crime in metropolitan cities over a long period of about twenty years coinciding with the beginning of the first data archiving that took place on the occasion of the first report and updated to 2023. The broad time period made available to scholars, and more generally to interested readers, offers a particularly valuable comparative analytical reference point on the dynamics of crime in the metropolitan areas of the country. As with previous editions, this Fourth Report also delves into and reflects on a particular crime whose visibility and rootedness have connections that are not only social but also economic and institutional: for this edition, the choice fell on gender violence and particularly that exercised in its various forms on women, a theme that although it has strongly emerged in more recent times represents a phenomenon rooted in time and that is expressed in different and heterogeneous forms, not limited to the family or interpersonal relationships but which affects the various articulations of the public space. Although aware of the difficulty of providing a decisive contribution to the understanding of the phenomenon under study, the Report - replicating an approach also used in previous editions - proposes an analysis methodology that is enriched by the contribution of various experts and that does not ignore either listening to the victims or an analysis of the stories of the perpetrators of the crimes. This Fourth Report concludes a series that has identified in the city of Naples a simple pretext from which to reason about what happens in our country in relation to certain crimes, also to break representative schemes of certain phenomena advanced without adequate support from empirical evidence.
