Abstract: La Repubblica napoletana del 1799 is the re-edition of Anna Maria Rao’s book published in 1997 for the Newton & Compton series of economic paperbacks. The text is accompanied by an unpublished paper presented at the conference Naples 1799. Enlightenment, Revolution and Social Change (Oxford, 24-26 September 1999). This initiative is a tribute to the author from friends, colleagues and students of Early Modern History of the Department of Humanities of the University of Naples Federico II.

This new edition is aimed at a large audience of readers: it is an invitation to learn about and rethink the history of the Neapolitan Republic, to reflect on its peculiar characteristics within the Triennium 1796-1799, the history of Southern Italy and the European history.
