Abstract: The volume edited by Silvana Casmirri traces the origins and development of the University of Cassino, from its first initiatives in the 1960s to its nationalization in 1979. Drawing on extensive historical documentation, the study situates the University’s foundation within the broader framework of the Italian higher education system, characterized by regional disparities and gradual policy planning. It examines the pioneering phase of the private Institute of Education (1964) and the Free Faculty of Economics (1969), highlighting the role of the Cassino University Consortium and the links between academia, local society, and the industrial growth of southern Lazio. The historical-documentary approach ensures methodological rigor and avoids celebratory tones, offering a critical interpretation of the institutional and social processes that shaped the University’s creation.
