Abstract:

Mersa/Wadi Gawasis is the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2055-1650 BCE) harbor to the land of Punt. The site is located on the Egyptian Red Sea coast between Safaja and Qosseir. Since 2001, this site has been investigated by an Italian-American Joint Expedition of the University “L’Orientale” and Boston University directed by Kathryn A. Bard and Rodolfo Fattovich. This book is the publication of the results of the 2001-2005 field seasons. It includes the description of the archaeological excavations providing data on the history and organization of the harbor. The associated finds are also described and discussed. These include several texts (stelae, ostraca, inscription on wood, papyri), sealings, local and imported ceramic materials, lithics, finds related to the ships and navigation, macrobotanical and malacological remains. They provide crucial insights into the ancient Egyptian activities in the Red Sea.
