Abstract: From the War of Succession to the defnitive abolition of the tribunal, the volume traces the main trials that reached Rome from the Iberian tribunal, giving rise to frequent jurisdictional conflicts that were already present at the tribunal's foundation, and never fully resolved. Between attempts at reform, diplomatic actions by the Holy See, and heretical resurgences, it is possible to observe the slow and intermittent decline of the Spanish Inquisition, which throughout the 18th century experienced moments of authority and incisiveness on the political scene, although perpetually contested between royal power and apostolic authority.
