In 1560 the bishop of Potenza, Nino di Ninis sought to obtain authenticated copies of a selection of documents (originally issued records), pertaining to the archives of the Potenza churches of San Gerardo (the cathedral), San Michele, and the Santissima Trinità. This operation was planned in the wake of a twenty–year dispute that had set in opposition the two leading authorities—political and ecclesiastical—of sixteenth-century Potenza.

In order to protect ecclesiastical property (by gathering and validating in a single repository the evidence needed to certify titles of ownership, prerogatives, and rights of the clergy of the three parishes), the bishop appealed to the supreme administrative body of the Kingdom, the Regia Camera della Sommaria, where a Volume de istrimenti testamenti, compre, transattioni et altre scritture a favore della mensa vescovile della città di Potenza et ecclesie di San Girardo, Santo Michele e Santissima Trinità (subject to the episcopal mensa) was compiled.

In the following centuries, much of the documentation transcribed and authenticated at the Sommaria in the sixteenth century was lost. The volume drawn up in Naples therefore makes it possible to recover from oblivion around one hundred previously unpublished documents, alongside records of which the original is still preserved, or which were known only through later copies.

The present book offers the edition of 174 records, spanning a chronological arc from 1201 to 1557. The great majority of them are private-law deeds, documenting legal transactions such as sales, exchanges, donations, testamentary dispositions, dowry assignments, inventories of goods, confirmations of grants, leases, etc. They reflect the property holdings of the three parish churches of Potenza: San Gerardo (the cathedral), San Michele, and the Santissima Trinità.
