Abstract: This volume brings together the results of research conducted as part of three degree theses in Architectural and Urban Design, discussed in the academic years 2022/23 and 2023/24, during the five-year single-cycle course (Arc5UE) at the Department of Architecture of the University of Naples Federico II. The research explores the hydrogeological risk of the Volturno River, addressing issues related to sustainable land management in fragile areas. The three theses analyze the social, environmental and economic implications of the phenomenon. The interdisciplinary approach combines hydraulic engineering and architectural and landscape design to develop adaptive strategies that integrate risk into urban planning. The three case studies examined - Castel Volturno, Capua and the Traversa di Ponte Annibale - highlight the potential of urban and environmental regeneration in transforming risks into opportunities for development and enhancement of the territory. The analysis focuses on several recurring flood events in the most critical stretch of the river, known as ‘Basso Volturno’, whose frequency is increasing due to climate change. The aim of the theses is to develop critical reflections on the possibility of coexisting with this phenomenon through targeted safety measures, exploring three different relationships with the river and the territory. The projects address the fragility of the area, and how this can become a reason for change through actions that seek to trigger improvement, starting from what already exists.

Author Biographies

Chiara Assante, University of Naples Federico II

Architect and PhD student in Architectural Design, she graduated with honours in Architecture from the University of Naples Federico II. Since 2023, she has been involved in teaching activities in the field of architecture and urban planning and has received two research grants in Environmental Design at the PLINIVS-LUPT Study Centre of the University of Naples Federico II, participating in the Horizon Europe Knowing project.

Marianna Mento, University of Naples Federico II

Architect graduated with honours in Architecture from the University of Naples Federico II in 2024. During her academic career, she explored issues related to urban redevelopment and architectural regeneration, thanks also to her experience in Belgium at the University of Liège and her participation in competitions and workshops. She currently works at the AIDNA architecture studio in Naples,  where she deals with different project scales and design methodologies.

Lucrezia Guadagno

An architect who graduated from the University of Naples Federico II in 2024, she enriched her training with Erasmus+ experiences in 2020 at ENSA Nantes and in 2022 at ENSA Marseille. She currently works in Paris at the List architecture studio, where she continues to develop projects with an interdisciplinary approach.

Nicola Paternuosto, University of Naples Federico II

Architect and PhD student in Architectural and Urban Design, he graduated with honours in Architecture from the University of Naples Federico II in 2024. In 2022, thanks to an Erasmus+ scholarship, he studied in Germany at the Department of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University, where he focused on the design of existing buildings and the adaptive reuse of post-war reinforced concrete buildings. These areas of research form the core of his doctoral studies, which are oriented towards the enhancement and regeneration of the built heritage.

Vincenzo Ceriello

Architect with honours in Architectural and Urban Design from the University of Naples Federico II in 2023. During his academic career, he enriched his training with two Erasmus+ experiences: in 2020 at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture in Nantes and in 2022 at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture Paris-Malaquais in Paris. Since 2023, he has been living and working in Paris.
