Abstract: The volume “Drug Utilization Profiles of Drugs for Peptic Ulcer and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease” aims to provide a detailed and comprehensive overview of the use and expenditure of medications for the treatment of peptic ulcer (PU) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in Italy and the Campania region from 2015 to 2023. The volume was produced by CIRFF (Research Center of Pharmacoeconomics and Drug Utilization Research) at the University of Naples Federico II, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Pharmacoepidemiology and Human Nutrition at the Mario Negri IRCCS Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan and IRCCS MultiMedica in Milan, to provide a detailed picture of drug consumption and prescriptions in Italy and Campania Region. The study, conducted both at the national level (Italy) and regional level (Campania), offers a broad overview of the use of drugs for PU and GERD. It assesses their impact in terms of healthcare spending and consumption, analyzing market data and pharmaceutical prescriptions. The results offer insights into the use of these medications in clinical practice and highlight potential areas for intervention to optimize their appropriate use. For this reason, the volume also delves into the regulatory dimension, particularly concerning their prescribability within the Italian National Health System in accordance with AIFA guidelines. Understanding prescribing dynamics, both qualitatively (appropriate use) and quantitatively (usage volumes), is the conditio sine qua non for framing rational drug policy, including the assessment of the effects of market interventions, regulations, or drug culture over time. For these reasons, this volume serves as a valuable resource for decision-makers in identifying strategies to promote the safe, efficient, and effective use of medications.
