Abstract: Published in this volume is the Latin text, with an Italian translation, of the Generales licterae of 1224, with which the Emperor and King of Sicily Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, inviting students, founded the first state university in history in Naples. Offering a detailed analysis of the context and significance of the deed, which gives new meaning to the concept of nobility, which can also be acquired through study, the book is part of the complex programme of celebrations for the Athenaeum's 800th anniversary.
