Abstract: The archaeological area unearthed between 2010 and 2021 during urban redevelopment works in the Paese Alto of San Benedetto represents, to date, the oldest evidence of the town's frequentation. In the second half of the first century B.C. a villa was built on a small promontory overlooking the sea, consisting, as was customary for the time, of two sectors: a residential and a productive one. Together with similar evidence identified along the southern coast of the Picenum and now accessible after excavation and enhancement activities (Cupra Marittima, Tortoreto) the villa of San Benedetto constitutes valuable evidence of Picenum wine production, mentioned by Pliny the Elder. Abandoned in the 4th century AD, the villa was occupied by a cemetery that formed a nucleus of aggregation for the residents, who elected it as a place of worship of the martyr Benedict.
