Abstract: This volume contains twenty-nine essays on Greek and Latin texts, presented to the renowned Hellenist Giuseppina Matino by members of the ‘Sciences of Antiquity’ Unit at the Department of Humanities of the University Federico II in Naples. The papers range from Greek language and literature to Latin language and literature, classical philology, papyrology, humanistic Latin literature, Byzantine philology, and classical reception. Such a variety of subjects reflects the multiple research fields that are being pursued at the ‘Sciences of Antiquity’ Unit, of which Giuseppina Matino has been in charge during the latest years of her academic career.

Author Biographies

Ferruccio Conti Bizzarro, University of Naples Federico II

Ferruccio Conti Bizzarro is Professor of Greek language and literature at the Department of Humanities of the University Federico II in Naples. He has written on Attic comedy (Poetica e critica letteraria nei frammenti dei poeti comici greci, 1999; Comici entomologi, 2009) and Greek lexicography (Ricerche di lessicografia greca e bizantina, 20142; Giulio Polluce e la critica della lingua greca, 2018). His other articles have been published in many Italian and international journals.

 

Mario Lamagna, University of Naples Federico II

Mario Lamagna is associate Professor of Greek language and literature at the Department of Humanities of the University Federico II in Naples. He is the author of two critical editions with commentary of Menander’s comedies (Perikeiromene, 1994; Samia, 1998). His main fields of research include New Comedy, theatre history, Atticism, Greek patristics and Byzantine medicine (critical edition of Abitianus, De urinis, by John Actuarius, 2017).

 

Giulio Massimilla, University of Naples Federico II

Giulio Massimilla is Professor of Greek language and literature at the Department of Humanities of the University Federico II in Naples. He is the author of a two-volume critical edition, with introduction and commentary, of Callimachus’ Aetia (1996, 2010). He has written on archaic Greek lyric, Attic drama, ancient Greek literary criticism, Hellenistic poetry, imperial and late antique Greek epic, ancient Greek novels, Greek literary papyri, and the reception of classical antiquity in contemporary literature.
