Abstract: This book, the fourth in the Imperialiter series, explores the theme of the imperial eschatology of the sovereign, which is investigated in its various manifestations and representations. Evoking the suggestions of the ultimate destinies of humanity, the sovereign amplifies the forms of his sovereignty, associating with it the traits that connect it to the second Parousia, the definitive return of Christ (the royal model par excellence), which will lead to the end of time and of all earthly sovereignty.

Author Biographies

Annick Peters-Custot, University of Nantes

Annick Peters-Custot is full Professor in Medieval History at the Nantes University, where she is also Dean of the Faculty of Historical Studies and Archaeology. Her research is mainly devoted to the history of Southern Italy from the Byzantine rule to the Swabian period (8^th-13^th century), and in particular focuses on the interactions and connections between the Byzantine Empire and the Western world in the religious field (monasticism, liturgy, hagiography) as well as on the notion of “imperiality” of the Norman kingdom of Sicily.

Fulvio Delle Donne, University of Basilicata

Fulvio Delle Donne is Professor of Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature at the University of Basilicata. His extensive scientific production combines philological-literary and historical methods and interests, covering a wide chronological arch (VI-XVI sec). His bibliography includes many critical editions and monographic volumes for prestigious publishers and numerous articles for international scientific journals. He is the President of the European Center for Studies on Aragonese Humanism and Renaissance - CESURA (www.cesura.info).
