Abstract: The volume outlines the historical profile of the University of Basilicata, from the first bill introduced in the Senate in 1969, to the implementation of its establishment, under the law 219/1981 on the reconstruction of the areas hit by the tragic earthquake in 1980, at the start and development of its scientific and teaching activities, from the inauguration of the first academic year, 1983-84, to that of 2019-20. The discursive part of each chapter is accompanied by a targeted documentary appendix, in order to better grasp the progressive and articulated development of the University, together with the scope and incidence of roles and functions exercised at the level of institutional and local relationships.

The path followed within the volume brings out the main connotations of the historical profile of the University of Basilicata, which among quite a few initial structural and services preconditions and progressive funding restrictions, has managed not only to safeguard and to maintain high standards of scientific and didactic activities, but also to play and develop an increasingly active and widespread role in the framework of the Italian and international university system.
