Abstract: When proposing the theme New frontiers of the parental role: maternity and paternity in the Latin American world, we aimed to transcend the gender frontiers, which are now obsolete in relation to the still ‘fluid’ codification of those realities identified in the LGBT+ inclusive world - gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender cultures... -. So we thought about a specific point of view, even if fluid in time and in the cultures of the different geographies: parental roles, pre-defined and immovable in patriarchal societies, but today profoundly affected not only by the weight of feminist demands but also by technological, scientific, medical and syndicalist progress, and, precisely, by the breaking down of that binary barrier that defined a priori roles and powers. There is no doubt that, in the texts published here, all these elements are present, either as protagonists or as background and subconscious, even with a useful distribution and intersection of female and male gazes that at times refer to a visionary “Madame Bovary c'est moi” that is even more inclusive and transgressive, although with a decided prevalence of ‘feminine’ discourses. There is a great variety of themes, geographies and approaches that preclude an unequivocal presentation, but undoubtedly prevalent are a wide range of narratives on the different degrees and modes of ‘transgressiveness’ with regard to the traditional topos of ‘maternal love’, continually being questioned, when not denied and infracted, by violent actions or psychologically deviant attitudes, and themes related to ‘absence’ for the most varied reasons within a family unit.
