Abstract: Born from the convergence of the PRIN 2022 project "Eastern Europe between Russia and the West: Contested Spaces, Identity Building and Memory Policies in Historical Perspective" and the project "West and East in Contemporary Europe: Empires, Philosophies, Ideal Representations, and Transnational Networks"—hosted by the Department of Humanities at the University of Naples Federico II—this volume addresses, through a series of case studies, the complex issue of Europe’s positioning between East and West in light of contemporary challenges. Historians of the modern era, philosophers, historians of philosophy, and scholars of language and literature examine—from diverse disciplinary perspectives—themes of great relevance: the Kosovo myth in Slavic literatures (Cristina Beretta); Europe’s borders and Russia’s position in the writings of Leopold von Ranke (Santi Di Bella); the Balkan and Russian East in European tourism between the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Annunziata Berrino); the comparison between Protestantism and Orthodoxy in the work of Max Weber (Filomena Fera); the East in the works of interwar European liberal authors such as A. Gide, G. Murray, and H. Focillon (Paola Cattani); the representation of Russia in the works of Thomas Mann (Domenico Conte); the 1946 Geneva International Meetings and the birth of bipolar Europe (Anna Pia Ruoppo); the categories of East and West in the thought of Ernst Jünger and Carl Schmitt (Marcello Boemio); the pop-rock culture of young Romanians in the 1960s and 1970s (Emanuela Costantini); Nikolai Danilevsky’s Russia and Europe and its reception in post-Soviet Russia (Giovanna Cigliano); East and West within the trajectory of European «mondiality» (Teodoro Tagliaferri).

Author Biographies

Giovanna Cigliano, University of Naples Federico II

Giovanna Cigliano is a full professor of Contemporary History at the Department of Humanities of the University of Naples Federico II and is the Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 project “Eastern Europe” between Russia and the West. Her research focuses on the history of Russia in the contemporary age. Her main publications include: Liberalismo e rivoluzione in Russia, Naples, 2002; Identità nazionale e periferie imperiali, 2 vols., Florence, 2013-14; Guerra, impero, rivoluzione: Russia, 1914-1917, Naples, 2018; La Russia e l’Occidente (edited with T. Tagliaferri), Naples, 2023; La Russia contemporanea. Anna Pia Ruoppo, University of Naples Federico II

Anna Pia Ruoppo is an associate professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Naples Federico II and works as an Erasmus lecturer at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. She is also a member of the doctoral board in Philosophical Sciences at the University of Naples “Federico II” and at Alberto Hurtado University in Santiago, Chile; an external collaborator with the Praxis Centre in Portugal and the Centre for Studies on Marx and Marxism at the University of Padua; and co-director of the international project “Umanesimi in transizione” and the international project “Polemos. Thinking of War as a Category of the Present’. She studied in Germany (Heidelberg, Tübingen, Freiburg im Breisgau) and in France (Paris). She is the author of numerous essays and translations. She has published the monographs Vita e Metodo (Florence, 2008), L’attimo della decisione (Genoa, 2011); Thinking Existence at the Level of Practice (Naples, 2022), Marxism and Existentialism: Two Philosophies of Europe (Milan, 2023) and has recently edited, together with R. Rubio, M. Rampazzo Bazzan, I. Viparelli and M. Boemio, Humanisms in Transition between Europe and Latin America (Milan, 2026).
