Abstract: Among the spurious works in the corpus of Lucian of Samosata is a dialogue entitled Nero, where two characters – an unidentified Menecrates and the famous Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus – discuss some topics related to Nero and his activities in Greece. This volume presents a new edition of the dialogue, which has thus far received scanty attention from scholars. The introduction addresses issues dealing with the work’s title and authorship, its relationship with other texts from the Imperial age that mention Nero, its language, style, manuscript tradition and printed editions up to the most recent one, published by Matthew D. Macleod in 1987. This is followed by the Greek text of Nero, based on the aforementioned edition, but with some deviations, and a new Italian translation, the first since Luigi Settembrini’s in 1862. A detailed commentary is then offered for the first time, including philological, linguistic, historical and literary analyses. The volume concludes with an extensive bibliography and three indexes, dedicated to notable Greek words and expressions, principal cited passages and topics respectively.

Cristiano Minuto è Ricercatore di Lingua e Letteratura Greca presso il Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. I suoi principali interessi di ricerca vertono sulla retorica e sulla ricezione della letteratura greca in età imperiale e tardoantica, che ha investigato con particolare riferimento al romanzo greco e alle opere di Nonno di Panopoli. Più recentemente si è occupato anche di tragedia e commedia greca frammentaria, di Dione Crisostomo, Quinto Smirneo e degli epigrammi della Anthologia Graeca di età giustinianea. È autore del libro «Il mondo bucolico nelle Dionisiache di Nonno di Panopoli. Rivisitazione letteraria e impianto retorico nel contesto tardoantico» (Napoli 2022).
