Abstract: The volume presents a selection of papers of the International Conference Ancient Egypt – New Technology hosted for its second edition by the Department of Asia, Africa and Mediterranean of the University of Naples L'Orientale, 5–7 July 2023. The volume highlights the growing integration of digital technologies within Egyptology. Methods such as laser scanning, photogrammetry, 3D modelling, and non-invasive imaging have significantly enhanced the documentation, analysis, and preservation of archaeological data and artefacts.The contributions reflect the interdisciplinary nature of this field, bringing together scholars from Egyptology, archaeology, anthropology, conservation, and digital heritage studies. Alongside innovative approaches, the volume also considers established diagnostic techniques, such as X-rays and CT scans, as essential tools for research.Overall, the volume underscores the importance of collaboration between the humanities and technological disciplines, offering an overview of current methodologies and future directions in the study and dissemination of the ancient Egyptian past.

Author Biographies

Stefania Mainieri, University of Naples L'Orientale

Stefania Mainieri is currently an RTDA researcher at the UniOr and the PI of the RecoGnISe Project, a  project which uses photogrammetry to study the geometry of coffins and statues, with the aim of identifying production methods and potential common workshops. She is also part of the research group of the project “sensE - The Sense of the Sacred: Anatomy of Egyptian Monasteries (4th–9th century).” Previously, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UniOr within the COSSAE Project, focusing on the study of religious aspects related to the Sun Temple of Niuserra at Abu Ghurab and the evolution of its main divine figures and researcher at the Museo Egizio di Torino and as a visiting associate researcher at the UCLA and PoliMi on a research project on 'yellow coffins' called the Faces Revealed Project (Horizon 2020 – MSCA-GF: 895130).

She specialises in museography, Egyptian funerary archaeology, religion, material culture and digital technologies. Since 2014, she has been an external collaborator at the Museo Archeologico Nazionle di Napoli, curating temporary and permanent exhibitions and cataloguing artefacts; since 2018, she has also been part of the Vatican Coffin Project, and permanent member of archaeological expeditions to the Abba Nefer monastery (Manqabad, Asyut) and the Sun Temple of Nuserra (Abu Ghurab, Saqqara).

Rosanna Pirelli, University of Naples L'Orientale

Rosanna Pirelli is a Professor of Egyptology and Egyptian Archaeology and Art History at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”.  She is scientific responsible for the project "From Egypt to Italy: itineraries of Egyptian and Egyptianizing Materials and cults in Campania". Since 2010-2011, she is the Director of two archaeological projects in Egypt, including the Italian Archaeological Mission at the Solar Temple of Niuserra, Abu Ghurab and the archaeological and restoration expedition at Manqabad, Asyut, in collaboration with the University of Rome and the Supreme Council of Antiquities (Egypt).  From 2008 to 2012, she has been responsible of the Italian Archaeological Centre in Cairo and coordinator of the Italian archaeological activities in Egypt. Since 1983, she has been involved in scientific projects and exhibitions for Italian Museums and Superintendences. From 2013 to 2016, she was the coordinator and curator of the new exposition of the Egyptian Collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (reopened on October 2016).
