Topic and Contents of the Book Series: Marcus Aurelius credits Rusticus with teaching him about carefully read: it is especially important not be content with a shallow understanding and not be persuaded by generic chatter ἀκριβῶς ἀναγινώσκειν καὶ μὴ ἀρκεῖσθαι περινοοῦντα ὁλοσχερῶς μηδὲ τοῖς περιλαλοῦσι ταχέως συγκατατίθεσθαι.
The series Akribos anaginoskein aims to be a vehicle of carefull reading of latin and greek texts and their reinterpretations over the centuries through a rigorous use of all the philological research’s instruments. Using these tools, it will be able to recognize the different interpretations or readings of the ancient texts and to fully understand their context of reading, the use and reuse of the classics from the most ancient eras to the contemporary (anaginoskein is both "to adopt a lesson" in a strictly grammatical context and "to know in depth" in a pre-writing phase).
The series therefore intends, on the one hand, to retrace the concrete developments of textual traditions in the late antique, medieval and humanistic periods.
On the other hand, it also wants to be a place to share and debate the modern and contemporary interpretations of the ancient texts by collecting the contributions of the modern and contemporary studies about the ancients. What is necessary in order to make our investigations on the ancients fully founded and aware, and avoiding the comparative approach of many current studies concerning the fortune of ancient texts in favor of a critically and historically founded reading of them.
In this way, in accordance with the most authentic tradition of the classical philology (i.e the boeckhiana antiquitatis cognitio historica et philosopha), the series refers to the model of a knowledge that aspires to have a relevant role in contemporary culture by elaborating general ideas, but searching for them through careful study, and avoiding the shortcuts of several present approaches.
Specifically, the series will publish a selection of monographs, miscellaneous volumes and critical editions, as results of research work of DICEM and DISU in collaboration with other national and international research groups.
