Abstract: Hausa – Language. History. Ideology was created with the aim of offering a comprehensive overview of one of the most dynamic and influential cultures in West Africa. Through the analysis of six aspects of the complex intertwining of language, history and culture, the volume outlines an interdisciplinary picture of the Hausa-speaking world. In Hausa, readers will find an introduction to the language and its historical evolution, the history of the group and its rich cultural production. The discussion of the latter highlights the ideological dimension that accompanies its manifestations, which are ever-changing and constantly renegotiated over time and in different centres of power. Ample space is given to the political, commercial and religious events that underpinned the most significant changes within Hausa society, in a period spanning the pre-Islamic era and the post-independence period. The volume includes thirteen in-depth sections that offer readers greater detail and further analysis on certain relevant topics that are peripheral to the main discussion. This work is aimed both at students of African languages and societies and at those who, for study, work or simple curiosity, wish to learn about the Hausa language and culture or explore certain aspects of it.
