Abstract: Today contemporary museums cannot be considered only in the narrow logic of their figurative expression, but must confront their urban and cultural contexts of reference. It is no coincidence that many Italian museums of the 21st century, are not set up in newly built architectures, founding the theories and practices of exhibition design in historic buildings no longer in use, operating on their interiors to be refunctionalized. The author reported the main evolutionary stages of the definitions of the term museum, which has undergone several contaminations in recent years, creating a new identity condition of the museum itself understood as a space of relationships.

Marco Borrelli, University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli

The author, a research professor of Interior Architecture Exhibition Design and Museography (ICAR 16), carries out research and teaching activities in the field of design culture aimed at the transformation and re-semantization of disused buildings by turning an investigative approach toward new conceptual models typical of contemporaneity where man and his psychological and perceptual dimension and sphere must re-enter the center of the processes of design culture. In addition to exhibition and commercial set-ups, it addresses and develops the theme of the business museum declined to the scale of the social as a new opportunity in the field of the third mission by connecting the young students of the course of Exhibit Design and Museography of the 5th year with the territory and cultural associations in the area of the province north of Naples and that of Caserta ancient area of terra di lavoro with a view to promoting the aesthetic experience, art and culture in the service of the recovery of identity and memory of places.
