Abstract: The first volume of Storia Politica del Giappone Contemporaneo reviews the last year of the Pacific War and the first step of the American occupation of Japan (1944-1947).

After paying attention to two important historiographical debates (the factors determining the end of the Pacific War and the role of the American occupation of Japan), the author, following the chronological structure of the narrative, focuses on the action of the winners and on the responses and choices of the losers.
