Abstract: The Catalogue of the Museo Orientale "Umberto Scerrato" of the University of Naples "L'Orientale" (1st edition 2012) contains descriptions ‒ both in Italian and English ‒ of all the objects on display, including recent acquisitions, organised according to their areas of origin. A historical, cultural and archaeological background is provided for each section with essays of Lucia Caterina, Rodolfo Fattovich, Bruno Genito, Roberta Giunta, Simonetta Graziani, Romolo Loreto, Andrea Manzo, Marina Vecchi, Giovanna Ventrone Vassallo, Giovanni Verardi.

The collection includes seals from the Ancient Near East, and various finds from Eastern Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia; sculptures from Northwestern India, Southeastern Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan; Islamic pottery, metalwork and funerary steles; and a selection of Chinese porcelain.

Author Biographies

Lucia Caterina, University of Naples "L'Orientale"

She was full professor of Archaeology and History of Chinese Art at the University of Naples “L'Orientale”. Since 2012 she has been director of the Museo Orientale 'Umberto Scerrato'. The main focus of her research is the study of East Asian art collections in Italian museums and she is the author of numerous monographs, exhibition catalogues and essays published in both national and international journals.

Roberta Giunta, University of Naples "L'Orientale"

She is Associate Professor of Islamic Archaeology and History of Art and Islamic Epigraphy at the University of Naples ‘L'Orientale’. Since 1993 she has carried out archaeological and epigraphic research in many Asian countries; since 2004 she has been deputy director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Afghanistan and since 2020 co-director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in al-Balid (Dhofar, Oman). Her publications include three monographic studies and numerous articles in national and international journals.
