Abstract: «And here, in my fascination with this mysterious writing, lies the real reason for my work». Thus Piero Meriggi (1899-1982) justified his “desertion” from the Anatolian languages to continue his research on the writing systems called “Proto-Elamite” (PE) and “Linear Elamite” (EL). Forty years later, this fascination has remained intact: the PE writing system, created at the end of the 4th millennium BCE, is still one of the oldest in the world and the interest about the origins of a phenomenon overlaps with the attraction for a writing still largely undeciphered, a characteristic it shares with the EL writing, which appeared in Iran almost 1000 years later, towards the end of the 3rd millennium BCE.
The publication of this volume by the Department Asia, Africa and Mediterranean of “L’Orientale” University make it possible to delve into the work that F. Desset has dedicated to these ancient representations of knowledge, be they of an economic and accounting character such as PE tablets or with a strong ideological connotation such as EL inscriptions, and constitutes an important step in the study of one of the most significant creations of human civilization: writing.
