Abstract: This volume presents the research findings on educational poverty from a study launched in 2022 as part of a project funded by the University of Naples Federico II (MAPO Project – Measuring and mApping educational POverty, coordinated by Prof. Cristina Davino – Department of Economics and Statistics) and continued until 2025 through a second project, Invisible Barriers, carried out in collaboration with Save the Children’s Research Centre and with the support of the GRINS project – Growing Resilient, inclusive and Sustainable, funded by the Ministry of University and Research as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The study proposes an innovative and multidimensional approach to measuring educational poverty, integrating objective and subjective indicators and focussing on the voices, perceptions and aspirations of young people. The research, conducted among adolescents aged between 15 and 19 living in Naples and its province, combines quantitative and qualitative methodologies, involving over 4,000 young people, both school leavers and current students. The focus on young people’s lived experiences brings to light latent dimensions of educational poverty and reveals the ‘invisible barriers’ that limit opportunities for growth. The results provide a detailed picture of educational inequalities in the Neapolitan context, highlighting the direct contribution of adolescents as a key element in understanding the phenomenon and offering a comprehensive overview that, it is hoped, will be of value to institutions and stakeholders.

Cristina Davino, University of Naples Federico II

Cristina Davino is a Full Professor of Statistics at the Department of Economics and Statistics at the University of Naples Federico II and coordinator of the research projects “Measuring and mApping educational Poverty” and “Invisible Barriers”. Her research over the last ten years, which is still ongoing, has focused primarily on the study of heterogeneity. The main areas of application of interest include the measurement of regional well-being and studies in the field of education, with particular attention to educational poverty, the evaluation of educational processes in terms of access, learning methods (learning analytics) and educational outcomes.

Fabbricatore Fabbricatore, University of Naples Federico II

Rosa Fabbricatore is a psychologist and a researcher in Statistics at the Department of Economics and Statistics at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. Her research focuses on latent variable models, with particular attention to their applications in Learning Analytics. She obtained her PhD in Social Sciences and Statistics with a dissertation on latent class analysis for proficiency assessment in higher education. More broadly, her work involves the development and application of statistical methods in the social sciences, educational psychology, and health psychology, with particular reference to structural equation models, Item Response Theory, and latent class analysis.

Rosaria Romano, University of Naples Federico II

Rosaria Romano is Associate Professor of Statistics in the Department of Economics and Statistics at the University of Naples Federico II. Her research focuses on the analysis of complex data structures, with innovative contributions to the management of uncertainty, the study of multi-block models, and the development of methodologies based on causal relationships. She is the author of numerous publications in national and international journals and has presented her work at numerous conferences in Italy and abroad. She is Associate Editor of the Italian Journal of Applied Statistics and reviewer for several journals specialising in statistics.
