Abstract: During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the studies on Greek and Latin literatures were often drawn into the fierce debates that arose in Europe in the wake of the Protestant Reformation: the editors of this volume maintain, in fact, that it is impossible to fully understand the history of classical studies during that period without considering the political and cultural context brought about by the religious conflict. From this perspective, the volume gathers contributions from scholars with diverse backgrounds, who have investigated the philological works produced in Rome at the Curia around the time of the Council of Trent and in the Reformed world, with a particular focus on the Dutch Calvinist sphere, whilst never losing sight of the repercussions of the bloody religious conflict unfolding at the time.
