Abstract: First published in 1943, Le Petit Prince marked the eightieth anniversary of its publication in 2023, reaffirming its status as one of the most widely translated and culturally influential works of the twentieth century. This collection of essays explores the work’s remarkable circulation across languages through a wide-ranging journey encompassing Europe, the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, and the Far East. The contributions gathered in this volume demonstrate that translations of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s tale are not merely acts of linguistic transposition, but genuine processes of resemanticisation, through which the work is reinterpreted in each language in the light of its distinctive cultural, educational, and identity-related traditions. What emerges is the profile of a global classic, capable of continually renewing its meaning through the plurality of voices that interpret it and of transforming a French tale into a shared heritage of humankind.

Author Biographies

Rosa Piro, University of Naples - L'Orientale

ROSA PIRO is Professor of Italian Linguistics at the University of Naples L’Orientale. Her research interests in historical linguistics range from medieval texts, with particular emphasis on the language of medicine and mysticism, to contemporary Italian. Her publications include the critical edition of the Almansore (SISMEL, 2011), the Glossario leonardiano di anatomia (Olschki, 2019), and L’italiano della medicina (Carocci, 2022).

Michele Costagliola d'Abele, University of Naples - L'Orientale

MICHELE COSTAGLIOLA D’ABELE is Associate Professor of French Literature at the University of Naples L’Orientale. His research focuses on contemporary French literature, with particular attention to Oulipian poetics and the works of Georges Perec and Raymond Queneau. His publications include L’Oulipo e Italo Calvino (Peter Lang, 2014), the Italian critical edition of Auguste de Forbin’s Charles Barimore (Colonnese, 2022) and numerous scholarly essays.
