Abstract: The volume is the result of a long-standing collaboration between BUN (University Library of Naples) and MAITB(Italian Archaeological Expedition at Tell Barri/Kahat), and documents a series of exhibitions and seminars held between 2022 and 2023.

The first part of the volume presents the exhibition catalogue, organized into four thematic sections – Memories, Thoughts, Landscapes, and Itineraries – which guide the reader through the valuable bibliographic collections of the BUN, including incunabula, atlases, and travel accounts dating from the fifteenth to the twentieth century. These materials are accompanied by a striking photographic selection drawn from the archives of MAITB about some ancient sites in Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey, and daily life scenes.

The second part brings together specialist essays that explore the theme of travel to the East from different perspectives: nineteenth-century travel literature; the analysis of early cartography; a comparison with journeys to the West; and Naples’ relationship with the East, including Neapolitan publishing and encounters among scholars, the book collections of the University “L’Orientale” of Naples, and the archaeological finds preserved in the MANN. The volume concludes with a reflection on the relationship between archaeology and politics, from the ancient world to the contemporary age.

The work, which offers a reflection on the myth of the East and its representation in European and Neapolitan culture, does not merely provide a scholarly retrospective, but also seeks to keep attention alive on the cultural heritage of Syria and neighboring countries, which is today at risk.
