Abstract: This book of abstracts summarised the contributions received at the 4th Workshop of the SETAC Italian Language Branch (ILB), held in Naples on October 13–14, 2025, which served as a key multidisciplinary forum for environmental science and policy. Organised at the historic University of Naples Federico II, the workshop focused on topics aimed at bridging the gap between research and regulatory frameworks. The scientific programme highlighted critical topics including the preservation of Mediterranean biodiversity, the management of emerging contaminants (including microplastics and PFAS), and the impacts of climate change on ecosystem and human health. By integrating sessions on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and advanced ecotoxicological modelling, the workshop fostered collaboration among academia, industry, and the public sectors. This event underscored Italy's commitment to sustainable environmental quality and the development of innovative risk mitigation strategies to protect our natural resources.

Giovanni Libralato is a SETAC ILB Council member since 2024 and Vice-President of SETAC ILB. He is full professor of Hygiene at the Department of Biology University of Naples Federico II. His extensive research focuses on the impacts of emerging contaminants, such as microplastics and nanomaterials, across aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, integrating advanced toxicity testing with "One Health" risk assessment strategies. With over 200 scientific publications, he contributes in developing innovative solutions for wastewater treatment and environmental remediation, playing a key role in bridging environmental science with public health and sustainable policy.

Federica Cacciatore, ISPRA

Federica Cacciatore is a SETAC ILB Council member since 2016 and more recently Social Media Manager of the SETAC ILB. She is a marine biologist expert on ecology of transitional waters, working at ISPRA as a Researcher. Among major topics: monitoring and assessment of contamination in biota, water and sediments of transitional and marine waters; Imposex; environmental quality assessment; ecological restoration assessment; statistical data analysis; scientific and technical support to the Italian Ministry of Environment. Member of: WG Ecological Status (ECOSTAT) CIS WFD 2000/60/CE; WG SO VI/09-06 Eutrophication – classification criteria; WG ENCA – Climate change adaptation – Coastal Wetland restoration. Silvia Franzellitti, University of Bologna

Silvia Franzellitti is a SETAC ILB Council member since 2022 and more recently Social Media Manager of the SETAC ILB. She is an Associate Professor at the Univ. of Bologna with a background in animal physiology and environmental science. Her research activity deals with molecular mechanisms behind physiological plasticity and stress response in marine invertebrates related to climate changes and emerging pollutants, including pharmaceuticals and microplastic. She is Associate Editor of Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, Frontiers in Physiology, and Frontiers in Marine Sciences

Claudia Vaj, Corteva Agriscience Italia

Claudia Vaj is member of SETAC Europe since 2015, member of SETAC ILB Council since 2016, currently External Advisor, coordinator of the SETAC ILB Young Scientist Award, and member of SETAC Europe Board of Directors since May 2022. She has a background in ecotoxicology and environmental sciences, and she works in the Regulatory and Stewardship Dept. of Corteva Agriscience Italia as Country regulatory Manager for Italy and Malta and focal point at Country level for environmental topics (e.g. mitigation measures of PPP, water, sustainable uses). She is also part of various working groups in Italian Crop Protection Association.

Stefania Marcheggiani, National Institute of Health

Stefania Marcheggiani has been a member of the SETAC ILB Council since 2022, serving as Vice President since 2023 and as President since 2025. She is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Environment and Health at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and holds a PhD in Advanced Microbial Biotechnologies. Her expertise spans environmental and public health, with a focus on waterborne pathogens, emerging contaminants, climate change, and the One Health and Planetary Health frameworks. Her work also includes ecological status assessments of aquatic ecosystems. She was actively involved at the national level in defining biological element sampling and methods, and in developing national method indices. She is Principal Investigator of several European projects, including BlueAdapt, Tulip, SURE-AMR, Health Risk Adapt, and JAMRAI 2. Since 2009, she has contributed to national and international activities under the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), including the WG ECOSTAT, the Geographical Intercalibration Groups (GIGs), and the WG Water Reuse. She is also an expert in IAMPHI working groups on Planetary Health, One Health, and Extreme Weather Events. In addition, she supervises Master’s and PhD students and regularly chairs or co-chairs international conferences and training courses.
